Tell es-Sultan - identified since late antiquity with Biblical Jericho, the Canaanite city-state of Ruha - was a major city in Pre-Classical Palestine, but also one of the most prominent human settlements of the Fertile Crescent in the Neolithic Period. Nowadays, it is the centre of the Jericho Oasis Archaeological Park (JOAP), a primary cultural resource in the Palestinian Territories.
It used to be visited by around 380,000 people per year.
In September 2023, after MoTA and Sapienza University commitment,
Tell es-Sultan was inscribed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites
