Radio science Laboratory

The Radio Science Laboratory of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department – Sapienza University of Rome, lead by prof. Luciano Iess, is specialized in radio science, planetary geodesy and analysis of radio tracking data of interplanetary spacecraft.

The team takes part in some of the most important ESA and NASA space missions (see our activities), and has achieved significant scientific results in geophysics, orbit determination and fundamental physics, also in collaboration with other important research institutes.

Prof L. Iess is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the radioscience instrumentation onboard ESA's BepiColombo and JUICE missions, with the MORE and 3GM experiments, respectively.

The Radio Science Laboratory has several collaborations, with both national and international research centers. The list includes the University of Bologna, the University of Pisa, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, in California), the California Institute of Technology (Caltech, in California), the Goddard Space Flight Center (Maryland), the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA, France), and many more.
