Remote sensing is the process of obtaining data and information about objects without actual physical contact or in-person observation, typically using satellites, drones, or aircraft equipped with sensors. Instead of physically touching or measuring things on Earth, remote sensing collects data through the detection of reflected or emitted energy, usually electromagnetic radiation.
Extracting information by remotely sensed measurements is nowadays a very hot topic that is grounded on a solid physics behind sensors, data acquisition, and image processing.
This is the subject that will be explored in this course that is to provide attendees with a solid background on the physical processes ruling the interaction between the electromagnetic wave and the observed scene.
The course is structured in such a way theoretical concepts are delivered along with extensive do it your self sessions to let the attendees practicing with real-life measurements and state-of-the-art modeling.

Attending this course, you have a great opportunity to learn and stay up to date on technologies, methodologies and applications of satellite Earth Observation. You will not only learn the principles of remote sensing and earth observation, but you’ll also delve into the processing of remotely sensed measurements using freely-available available tools (processing platforms, analytics) and by developing own software codes. The processing aims at generating added-value products in the following thematic domains: land, ocean, atmosphere and polar environment

It is instrumental - for a full understanding of the ability and possibilities offered by EO - to have basic information on electromagnetic waves and their propagation through homogeneous and inhomogeneous media.
This course offers the possibility to learn the necessary electromagnetic background needed to look at EO from an engineering perspective and, therefore, to be able to process EO measurements to transform them into added-value products.
