Mauro Maggi (PhD 1992) is professor of Iranian philology since 2019 (Philology, religions and history of Iran). Born in Como, he was a librarian at the Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente (Rome) and associate professor of Indo-Iranian philology at L’Orientale University (Naples) and of Iranian philology at La Sapienza. His areas of expertise are the Khotanese language and literature, Central Asian Buddhism, the history of the Iranian languages, and early and sub-standard New Persian. He has published The Khotanese Karmavibhaṅga (1995), Pelliot Chinois 2928 (1997), and many scholarly articles. Among his edited books are Middle Iranian lexicography (2005, with Carlo G. Cereti), The Persian language in history (with Paola Orsatti, 2011), Buddhism among the Iranian peoples of Central Asia (with Matteo De Chiara and Giuliana Martini, 2013), and A turquoise coronet: studies in Persian language and literature in honour of Paola Orsatti (2020, con Mohsen Ashtiany).
