Objectives
The Department of Mathematics Guido Castelnuovo (DMC) aims to develop as an international and excellence center for research and higher education.
The main objectives of the project are:
to strengthen the research fields in which the DMC is traditionally strong, and to open the DMC to new research fields
to increase attractiveness of the doctoral school, and of the DMC for postdocs and researchers
to recruit young talents
to increase participation in competitive funding programmes
to create a source of mathematical tools available to the productive world and schools
to improve infrastructures and computing resources
Plan of action
Here is a list of main actions that will be carried out to reach the set objectives:
Recruitment of new staff. We plan to hire personnel both at "tenure track" and permanent level to strengthen the main research lines of DMC and to expand them in new directions. We will offer several post-doctoral positions to attract young international talents.
Organisation of thematic research periods about the main research themes of the project. There will be leading research experts in the fields and we will organize Ph.D schools, research workshops and conferences.
Enhancement and internationalisation of the Ph.D programme. We want to attract excellent students for the Ph.D programme by increasing the remuneration of the Ph.D. scholarships and offering financial support towards co-supervision scholarships. We will support dissemination and cultural exchange initiatives directly organised by doctoral students.
Invitation of renowned scholars to do joint research collaborations and to expand the offer of Ph.D. courses.
Organisation of meeting days with representatives of productive or educational realities in order to present to DMC graduates and doctorates the opportunities and skills required in the workplace.
To establish new contacts between the DMC and companies by also integrating them within the master and Ph.D programme, encouraging company internships and theses in applied mathematics and modelling.
To develop a computing cluster to carry out scientific research computing activities and setting up of a new computer laboratory for students to be used for modelling and scientific calculation.
Improving the sustainability of the building by replacing the fixtures for a better thermal insulation.
