The main idea that led us in organizing this conference was that of creating a space where to discuss more than just mathematics. We are a group of early career researchers in algebra, representation theory and algebraic geometry. As young academics we are drawn to spaces that give us the opportunity to expand our mathematical horizons while also talking about the problems that affect our daily lives, in academia and beyond. The conference CARE is our way of creating such space. We wanted to do that while keeping mathematical research as a central topic, in order to create an event where participants could actively learn something new and create personal connections and collaborations with neighbouring people.
The natural questions that come up to mind are: so what is the CARE conference? How will the above objectives be achieved?
Let us settle that CARE is a conference on mathematical research aimed at young researchers, whose focus is to foster collaborations between different but close areas of algebra, representation theory and algebraic geometry. In order to achieve this there will be two morning mini-courses which will treat topics that use many different tools and touch several areas of mathematics. The courses will be designed to be as accessible as possible without sacrificing mathematical depth, so that everyone participating could learn something from following them. These mini-courses will also highlight accessible open problems, offering participants the opportunity to engage with them in future research. In the afternoon there will be space for talks. We will dedicate this time to early career researchers such as PhDs and post-docs and in particular to people who are seeking for collaboration with other mathematicians.
Because we believe in the importance of redeveloping local collaborations in our mathematical communities, CARE is designed as a local event. It is with this in mind that we chose Lyon as our location, being a well connected city in the heart of Europe. To us, redeveloping local collaborations is tied to expand personal mathematical horizons and making connections with people coming from neighboring research areas. Thus, CARE will promote talks and mini-courses that share open problems and allow collaboration between people with complementing mathematical knowledge.
Parallel to the research aspect, it is of utmost importance for us to create an environment in which people can talk about and discuss ethical issues within our research community. Each day will end with a one hour ethics talk, given by experts, which will be followed by a moment of collective discussion. We hope that this, together with the friendly environment that we want to create, will give participants tools to imagine positive changes in their respective institutions. The list of ethic topics that are going to be discussed is not exhaustive and we hope we will be able to treat many more in future.
Many more ethical considerations are integrated into various aspects of CARE's organization. All meals and coffee breaks will be vegetarian with vegan options. We are committed to gender equality and strive for equal representation in participant and speaker selection. We will not fund people travelling by plane but offer more financial support for those taking a long train trip, for instance paying for an extra night stay in order to break up the trip. We believe that avoiding air travel is a realistic and accessible choice for those interested in attending the conference, because of the local nature of the event and the fact that Lyon is easily accessible by train from many parts of Europe.
Dates: 27/10/2025 - 31/10/2025.
Location: UMPA - ENS Lyon, 46 allée d’Italie, 69700 Lyon.
For more information, go to the "Practical Info" section of this website.
The deadline for requesting financial support and submitting talk proposals is June 30th, 2025. After this date, registration will remain open; however, participants will no longer receive priority for funding applications.
