In our program, food is more than a snack; it’s a learning experience. We source our ingredients directly from the local farmer’s market, bringing fresh, seasonal produce into our cooking and snack stations.
Our goal is not only to teach clients how to prepare and enjoy healthy food, but also to show them how food connects us to our community. Together, we:
Support local farmers by purchasing produce directly from the market.
Learn where our food comes from and how it’s grown.
Practice budgeting, making a shopping list, and selecting ingredients.
Prepare simple, nutritious recipes at camp.
We also have a vision for the future, one day, Uniquely will have its own stand at the farmer’s market, where our clients can sell items they’ve made, share their skills, and become active participants in the community.
Movement breaks are built into each day, allowing clients to explore different ways of connecting with their bodies, from dancing and yoga to outdoor games and nature walks. For moments when quiet is needed, our Rest Station provides a calming, sensory-friendly space with weighted blankets, light projectors, and headphones.
Clients have the freedom to rotate through daily activity stations, such as:
Arts & Crafts
Science Experiments
Home Economics (DIY cleaning products, body scrubs, cooking)
Constructive Play
Providing individualized assistance to help students complete homework and strengthen academic skills in a supportive environment.
Our approach includes:
• Structured Homework Time: A dedicated quiet space with minimal distractions for focused learning.
• Individualized Support: Staff available to guide students through challenging assignments, clarify instructions, and provide accommodations as needed.
• Skill-Building Opportunities: Incorporating study strategies, organization skills, and executive functioning tools to promote independence.
• Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging perseverance and celebrating academic achievements to build confidence and a love of learning.
We go beyond the walls of our program space to connect with the world around us, from weekly visits to the Hermosa Beach Farmer’s Market to nature walks and beach days. These outings build real-world skills, social connections, and confidence.
Our future goal is to bring our creations, from handmade soaps to healthy snacks, to our own booth at the local farmer’s market. This will allow clients to experience entrepreneurship, practice communication and customer service, and see their work valued by the community.
