Description of the course:

Do we need a global development agenda? What is the advantage to set up global goals? And what the difficulties to implement and reach them? Too many goals, too little focus? Or not enough? Is this just a ‘book of dreams’ or can be, or become, an effective action plan for attaining a global sustainable development?

The aim of this introductory class is to discuss the rationale behind a global development agenda and try to give an answer to (some of) these questions. We will, first, provide an overview of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals; we will then, discuss the genesis of this agenda and identify common traits and elements of distinction with the prior 2015 MDGs agenda; finally, we will try to shade light on SDGs strengths and weaknesses.

§ Learning outcomes:

Students will learn the basic principles that inspired the 2030 Agenda and its antecedent, will get an overall view of its contents and the challenges that citizens, policy makers, stakeholders, international agencies must face in order to achieve these goals.

§ Credits: the introductory class does not provide any credits; credits are only recognized in combination with the specific courses. The attendance to the Introductory Class in not mandatory, but it is highly recommended in view of better understanding the contents of the specific SDGs' courses.
