Title: Trust in the Age of Social Media: Understanding the Dynamics and Implications
Abstract: As social media becomes increasingly integral to daily life, the question of trust in online interactions and content has become a critical area of study. This talk delves into the complex relationship between social media and trust, exploring how trust is built, maintained, and eroded in digital environments. We will examine the factors that influence trust in social media platforms, content, and users, including the role of algorithms, misinformation, and echo chambers. Moreover, the talk will examine the impact of technical approaches such as trust-by-design in addressing trust-related issues in Social Networks. The discussion will also address the impact of social media on trust in traditional institutions such as news organizations, governments, and scientific communities. Through a synthesis of recent research and case studies, the talk will highlight the challenges and opportunities that social media presents for fostering trust in online communities. Ethical considerations, particularly regarding the responsibility of platforms and users in combating misinformation and promoting transparency, will be critically analysed. Finally, the talk will offer insights into potential strategies for enhancing trust on social media, from design interventions to policy recommendations. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the dynamics of trust in the social media landscape and practical approaches to addressing trust-related challenges in their own work.
