Welcome to the 2021-22 STEAM Challenge!

This challenge opens on November 2nd, 2021 and submissions are due on March 31, 2022.

DESIGN THE CLASSROOM OR SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE

Using design thinking, improve and transform current schools and classrooms. Classrooms of the future need to be fun, safe places to learn. Work collaboratively, be creative, and have fun designing the schools or classrooms of the future.

The Design Thinking Process:

  • Empathize: Ask questions of the people who will be using your classroom of the future. For example: what do they like/dislike about current classrooms?

  • Define: Decide what you are going to address in your project. For example: The problem with current classrooms is that there is too much clutter.

  • Ideate: Here's where creativity is essential. Think of different, unique ways to fix the problem you defined. For example: Make classrooms have 360-degree whiteboards so every student can write and participate at one time on the board, reducing the availability of cluttered spaces.

  • Prototype: Draw and design the classroom of the future, using the input of the Empathize, Define, and Ideate answers. For example: Use Tinkercad to design a classroom with whiteboard walls. Later, you might build-out a cardboard diorama after repeating testing.

  • Test: Show your prototype to the people you asked in the Empathize portion. Does the prototype fit their needs? Does the prototype need more work/changes? Take notes on what your audience said.

  • Repeat: You will repeat Ideate, Prototype, and Test several times to get the project to be completed and to your audience's liking. The final product will be the 3D model or video of your project.
