Directions:
For this assignment you will be taking a deeper look into the fossils and evolution of organisms in the Mesozoic Era.
We will be modeling a sedimentary rock with the fossil record on the bottom flaps and exploring the evolution of mammals on the top flaps
The bottom flaps will be review for the other SLOs
COVER:
You are going to draw a recreation of the meteor strike event that ended Mesozoic Era, wiped out dinosaurs and eventually led to the current age of mammals. 🐿️
Needs to include:
Colored Title 🖍️
Colorful Diagram showing the Meteor Impact ☄️
Your Favorite Extinct Dinosaur 🦖🦕
FLAP FRONTS: The three front flaps represent the 3 periods of the Mesozoic and the 2 extinctions that started and ended the era - scroll down for additional resources!
Requirements (Click the links to the right for more info):
Name of the period - most recent period should be on top (as it would be in a rock) Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic
2 Labeled Mass Extinctions ☠️
An index fossil 🐚
Show which sedimentary rock type with a pattern 🪨
Go through the slides to learn more about the 2 mass extinctions, the P-T and K-T extinctions that bookended the Mesozoic Era.
Index Fossils are the fossils of organisms which existed during a relatively short, well-defined geologic time span. They are used by scientists to relatively date rock layers and fossils where index fossils are found.
Index Fossils must be:
found in rock layers throughout the world
easy to identify
many fossils of the organisms must exist
An extremely common index fossil are foraminifera fossils. Foraminifera (Forams) shells are the fossil remnants of single celled marine plankton! They are globally abundant shells which tend to fossilize well so scientists can use them to date rocks when found. Look at the diagrams below for some of the species that are found in each period of the mesozoic we will be looking at.
Use the diagram below as inspiration for your sedimentary rock layer, in the uppermost example, the Cretaceous Period is a layer of Dolostone, The Jurassic Period is Breccia, and the Triassic is Conglomerate. You can modify the patterns to make them your own, just be sure that the layers are distinct from each other!
