Over the course of the year, students will be able to use combine their mathematical skills and creativity to create images using Desmos.com. This year the 8th graders at Dartmouth Middle School created three different types of projects: Desmos Initials Project, Coat of Arms, and Picture Project (IM1 Students only).
Students use Linear Equations to create their initials. This project emphasizes the importance of the y-intercet and slope of a linear equation. The project also gives a preview of how restrictions on the domain and range affect their equations.
In this project, students are to choose the outline of a shield they desire and will place four different items inside of the shield. One section contains the first initial of their first name, the second section contains their favorite mathematical operation, the third section contains their favorite number (this can be displayed in a different language or style they prefer), and the fourth section is a free space where the student can create a geometric design or recreate an image of their favorite sport, object, food, etc. This project utilizes their knowledge of linear, quadratic, and exponential equations (and some inequalities).Â
