Desmos Projects
Eighth Grade Desmos Projects
Over the course of the year, students will be able to use combine their mathematical skills and creativity to create images using Desmos.com. This year the 8th graders at Dartmouth Middle School created three different types of projects: Desmos Initials Project, Coat of Arms, and Picture Project (IM1 Students only).
Desmos Initials Project: Creating their initials using linear equations
Students created their initials using only Linear Equations they learned how to make earlier in the year. This project emphasizes the importance of finding the y-intercept, and how slope can change the form of the letter created. This also gave a preview of restrictions on the domain and range they will learn about in a later class.
Creating a personalized Coat of Arms shield
In this project, students are to choose the outline of a shield they desire and will place four different items inside of the shield. One section contains the first initial of their first name, the second section contains their favorite mathematical operation, the third section contains their favorite number (this can be displayed in a different language or style they prefer), and the fourth section is a free space where the student can create a geometric design or recreate an image of their favorite sport, object, food, etc. This project utilizes their knowledge of linear, quadratic, and exponential equations (and some inequalities).
Recreating a picture or photo in Desmos
The last project given to the Integrated 1 Class was to recreate a picture or photo using desmos.com. This image had to be completed to the best of their ability. The students could use inequalities to color in the image, or use equations to outline the image.
