Off to a great start!
We are off to a great start this school year! I have been enjoying getting to know my students and building a class community these past couple of weeks. Parents, if you haven't done so yet (I am missing 3)- please fill out this Parent Survey to help me know your child and family better. Thank you!
Digital Citizenship
On the first week of school we discussed being aware of how much time we are spending on screens, and making sure to have a nice balance of screen time vs. non-screen time in our day. Students created their own media balance plan. Continue the conversation at home with this Family Tech Planner.
This week, we will begin a class novel, Esperanza Rising. We will practice looking for Notice and Note signposts to deepen comprehension.
In grammar, we will review figurative language, focusing on similes and metaphors.
In writing, we will begin our narrative writing unit. Students will find a small topic to write a personal narrative about.
We will continue Module 1 in Eureka Math this week. Module 1 covers place value concepts for multiplication and division with whole numbers. There will be a Topic A quiz on Tuesday. Then we will begin Topic B, which focuses on multiplication of large numbers with area model and the standard algorithm.
In 5th grade, all students must be fluent with multiplication facts. Please practice at home if your child is not fluent.
This week we will be starting social studies. Our first chapter in our History Alive textbook focuses on the geography of the United States.
We will begin our science rotations next week. In place of science, we will be finishing up projects from last week.
We have PE with Rhythm and Moves on Fridays. This is in addition to our class PE.
5th grade students will choose between band and choir. Please read the following message from our district's music teachers:
Hello USD families! We are super excited to have another year of awesome music making. Before we can get started there’s a couple of things we need from you.
Band/Choir Choice Form: We will need the Band/Choir Choice Form sent out on ParentSquare completed by Friday, August 21st to make sure your child is placed in the appropriate class. If you need assistance acquiring an instrument, please contact Jordan ASAP. Remember, USD only has a limited number of trumpets and trombones to loan out, so please specify if you need a school owned instrument. School owned instruments will be distributed on a first come first serve basis. All band students need to have their instrument acquired by Monday, September 14th. Here is the Music Choice Form!
