Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 11/13-11/20. Please sign up for a date & time here if you haven't done so already. We will use our time to discuss your child's progress in the first trimester.
This week we will continue our book clubs. Students will be reading one of five books: Front Desk, Unplugged, Restart, The Westing Game, or Spy School Revolution. Students will complete comprehension activities and generate discussion questions. This week's focus will be on summarizing the main idea. On Friday students will meet with other classmates who are reading the same book to have a discussion about what they've read so far.
This week our Greek/Latin root is SCRIB/SCRIPT (write). The prefix is post___ (after) and the suffix is __er/est (more/most). The vocab test will be on Friday.
In writing, we will start writing the Diary of an Animal. We will found inspiration from reading books in the series Diary of Worm.
This week, we will have a Topic A quiz that focuses on multiplication of a whole number by a fraction. Then we will start Topic B which focuses on multiplication of fractions.
In 5th grade, all students must be fluent with multiplication facts. Please practice at home if your child is not fluent.
Students are with Mrs. Hettrick learning about life science in this science rotation.
This week, we will start learning about the thirteen colonies. We will read chapter 7- Comparing the Colonies, in our TCI text.
We have PE with Rhythm and Moves on Tuesdays. This is in addition to our class PE.
Our music program takes place every Tuesday morning. See the following messages from our band teacher:
5th Grade Band Parents: Hello band parents,
We are starting to make our first sounds on our instruments and with the full instrument. While this is an exciting time, please remember that like anything, it will take practice. If your child seems frustrated, please remember that learning an instrument is challenging and might take several practice sessions to get a skill correct. The only way to get better at playing instruments is to have a consistent practice schedule, so please encourage your child to practice, even if it is only for 15 minutes a day. Also, check out these resource videos for tips on playing!
https://habitsuniversal.com/habits-videos/clinic-videos/
These videos are done by professional musicians and can be a great resource!
Please remember that these instruments are very delicate and require proper handling. When at home, please do let anyone but your child assigned to that instrument touch it. Additionally, now that we are starting to make our first sounds, please encourage your kids to practice. If there is a concern with noise, there are trumpet and trombone mutes available to reduce the amount of sound your child makes. They will still be able to practice, but it won’t be nearly as loud. Check this out! https://www.sshhmute.com/?srsltid=AfmBOormbYJ1eMRqPB4hqw6zRP_FiC3I3P1-eDaMIYhwNYZhYDO9ezRZ
If you live in an area where loud noises will be a concern, consider purchasing a mute for your child!
If your child is playing clarinet or saxophone this year, they will need to provide their own reeds. Recommended reed brands are Rico, Vandoren, Juno, or Da’darrio and size 2 or 2.5 is the recommended size. These brands will produce the best sound and will lead your child to success. Other brands might not be high enough quality and can lead your child to frustration. Every clarinet or saxophone player must have at least three playable reeds at all times and cannot be played once they are broken. Please consider purchasing a reed guard to protect the reeds against damage! Additionally, an instrument swab is required for clarinets and saxophones. This is how we clean the instrument and prevent potential sickness and instrument damage. A silk swab is recommended.
Finally, we are at the point of the year when your child can no longer switch from band to choir or choir to band. Whatever elective they are in currently is what they will be in for the rest of the year. Switching at this point would be extremely disruptive for Mr. Parker and Mrs. Grieg.
