No new announcements for this week.
This week we will read a fiction story called "The Ghost Bell" in our Storyworks Magazine. We will focus on how an author creates mood. Students will take a quiz on Friday where they will also practice ACE.
This week our Greek/Latin root is SECT (cut, separate). The prefix is trans___ (across) and the suffix is __ful (full of). The vocab test will be on Friday.
In writing, we will continue our second personal narrative. In this unit we will use a mentor text, called "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros to learn from. This week we will focus on adding mood into our writing and stretching out the tension as we storytell.
This week, we will finish Topic B, which focuses on the addition and subtraction of fractions by making like units. There will be a quiz on Tuesday. Then we will start Topic C which focuses on addition and subraction on Mixed numbers.
In 5th grade, all students must be fluent with multiplication facts. Please practice at home if your child is not fluent.

We have PE with Rhythm and Moves on Tuesdays. This is in addition to our class PE.
Our music program takes place every Tuesday morning. See the following messages from our band teacher:
5th Grade Band Parents: Hello band parents,
If your child has not gotten their instrument, that means that I am either missing the instrument rental agreement or I am missing the google form to borrow an instrument from one of our middle schools. If I have messaged you and sent you a google form on ParentSquare, please fill the form out ASAP. Please note that I will be the one that delivers the instrument from the middle school and both schools are asking for a $120 donation to help cover the cost of the instrument maintenance.
Please also remember that these instruments are very delicate and require proper handling. When at home, please do let anyone but your child assigned to that instrument touch it. Additionally, now that we are starting to make our first sounds, please encourage your kids to practice. If there is a concern with noise, there are trumpet and trombone mutes available to reduce the amount of sound your child makes. They will still be able to practice, but it won’t be nearly as loud. Check this out! https://www.sshhmute.com/?srsltid=AfmBOormbYJ1eMRqPB4hqw6zRP_FiC3I3P1-eDaMIYhwNYZhYDO9ezRZ
If you live in an area where loud noises will be a concern, consider purchasing a mute for your child!
If your child is playing clarinet or saxophone this year, they will need to provide their own reeds. Recommended reed brands are Rico, Vandoren, Juno, or Da’darrio and size 2 or 2.5 is the recommended size. These brands will produce the best sound and will lead your child to success. Other brands might not be high enough quality and can lead your child to frustration. Every clarinet or saxophone player must have at least three playable reeds at all times and cannot be played once they are broken. Please consider purchasing a reed guard to protect the reeds against damage! Additionally, an instrument swab is required for clarinets and saxophones. This is how we clean the instrument and prevent potential sickness and instrument damage. A silk swab is recommended.
Finally, we are at the point of the year when your child can no longer switch from band to choir or choir to band. Whatever elective they are in currently is what they will be in for the rest of the year. Switching at this point would be extremely disruptive for Mr. Parker and Mrs. Grieg.
