Q: What is District Choir?
A: District Choir is an annual event sanctioned by MSHSAA. Auditions for the choir are held each fall. The group is comprised of high school students from all of the schools in the East Central District #7.
----------------------------------------------------------
Q: Who is eligible to participate?
A: Each school is allowed to bring a specific number of high school students per voice part to audition. This number is based school size. Each student who auditions must meet MSHSAA eligibility requirements to participate. (Have no more than one F on the previous semester's transcript.)
----------------------------------------------------------
Q: What will I have to do to audition for the choir?
A: Each student will have two parts to their audition:
One will be the sight-reading and key signature identification portion. In this part of the audition, the student will have to identify randomly 1 sharp key signature and 1 flat key signature. After identifying key signatures, the student will have to perform a melodic and a harmonic sight-reading exercise. Melodic sight-reading is singing a line of music by yourself. Harmonic sight-reading is reading a Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass line of music while the other 3 parts (that are not your voice part) are being played. Before singing each of these exercises, the student will be allowed a short period of time to look over the music. During this time you can do anything you would like to prepare yourself, including singing through the exercise out loud or to yourself. Links to practice files can be found on the right side of this page.
The other portion of the audition will be the performance of a vocal solo. The selection will be chosen from one of the 4 Italian songs the rotate each year. Links to practice files can be found on the right side of this page.
----------------------------------------------------------
Q: How much time will I have to commit if I make this choir?
A: Each member of the choir is required to attend a Tuesday evening rehearsal the week before the concert as well as an all-day rehearsal on the Saturday of the performance. In addition each student will be expected to spend an allotted amount of time each week practicing their music as is stated in the contract they will receive. The better you know they music before the rehearsal dates, the better your experience will be.
----------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why would I want to commit myself to extra time out of my already busy schedule?
A: It's FUN and a GREAT opportunity to become a better choral musician as well as meet and become friends with other vocalist from our neighboring schools. If you are unsure, just ask someone who has been in the choir in previous years. They can tell you all about their experience.
----------------------------------------------------------
Q: What are the dates for this year's District Choir?
A: The audition and performance dates are posted on the choir calendar.
Note: You must be logged in with your school google account to access these files.
STATE CHOIR INFORMATION
If you are a Junior or a Senior, you make the District Choir, and you rank toward the top of your section, you may receive notification that you are eligible to audition for State Choir. If you choose to audition, you will do so during the first District Choir rehearsal. You will have to prepare to sing one of two choir pieces that rotate each year on your voice part. This performance score will be averaged with your sight-reading score from your District Choir audition to determine if you make the State Choir. If you make the State Choir, you would be required to attend a specified number of rehearsals as wells as attend and perform at the Missouri Music Educators Convention that takes place in the end of January.
