Troubleshooting/FAQs
Common (and not so Common) Questions/Issues Regarding the ActivPanel
Help! My touch screen isn't working.
If you lose touch capability on your ActivPanel, try these solutions:
Check that the cables are fully inserted. It seems like a no-brainer, but cables come loose more often than you think, especially if the desktop computer is moved around a lot. Also check that the cables are paired correctly. If the HDMI cable is plugged into the HDMI 2 port, the Touch cable (printer cable) must be plugged into the Touch 2 port. The HDMI and Touch cables go together.
Check that the Freeze or Finger buttons are not active. Check in the upper right corner of the panel to see if the snowflake or finger symbols are present. If so, simply press the appropriate button.
As you have probably experienced, the panel screen is very touch sensitive - meaning you don't have to directly touch the panel for it to sense the touch. This also means that you cannot have anything taped to the panel or that has the opportunity to touch the panel (papers, decorations, etc.). This can interfere with the effectiveness of the touch screen.
You may notice areas of black on either side of your screen and when you touch in one place it reads in another place. Check that the screen resolution on the desktop is set high enough (see the section - "How can I change the screen resolution to remove black bars" - further on this page for instructions.) If that does not work, you may either need a new monitor or you can make the ActivPanel your monitor. Let me know if you need me to show how to do that.
Why can't I scroll when using the Annotate app?
You may notice that when you are using the Annotate app you lose the ability to scroll your document or select any other item on your desktop without returning to your computer. To get around this, simply click the eyeball on the Annotate tool bar. This will hide your annotations and restore your ability to scroll or otherwise select other items on the screen without going back to your computer. Click the eyeball again to resume annotating.
Why doesn't the keyboard pop up when I am in source mode?
If you find it cumbersome to have to return to your computer every time you wish to type something on your panel, you have two options:
Plug a keyboard into one of the USB ports on the front of the panel or connect a wireless keyboard.
Activate the virtual keyboard. To do this, you need to go into your computer settings. Follow this path: Settings -> Devices -> Select Typing on left menu -> on main screen scroll to Typing section and make sure the last button in the section is turned in the "On" position. This is the virtual keyboard.
Help! I have no sound on my Timer or Spinner!
With the latest update to the ActivPanel firmware the Timer has been upgraded and the Spinner has been replaced. Each of these apps now allows you to choose between a couple different sounds. In order to activate sound, you need to select the desired option in the app settings. You will also find visual options as well.
Why can't I use the Whiteboard when I am using my desktop?
Because these are two separate sources, they cannot be combined at this time. The Whiteboard, while it is an app, can only be accessed via the ActivPanel (Home source). There are two options to explore:
When on your desktop, use ActivInspire as a whiteboard and re-size the window so you can view multiple activities at once.
If you are using any Internet-based programs or Google slides, access these through Chromium from the ActivPanel (Home source). You can split the screen so the Whiteboard and Chromium appear side-by-side. Let me know if you need a refresher on how to do this.
I am pretty tech savvy, how can I learn more on my own?
Glad you asked! If you are the type who likes to fiddle around and engage in self study, you may want to create a free account at one.prometheanworld.com or learn.prometheanworld.com. You will find some great resources to increase your knowledge of the ActivPanels and discover different ways you can use the panel in your classroom.
Where can I go to get ready-made flipcharts?
If you would like to save a little time or get some lesson ideas that you can build from, then visit the Promethean Resource Library at https://resourcelibrary.one.prometheanworld.com/resources. Here you can filter and search for flipcharts by subject, grade level, free or paid, and even rating. The flipcharts are fully customizable, so once you download it, it is yours.
For more information, click to see the Resource Library User Guide in the Resources section.
**Please note, you will have to create a free account at Promethean World to access the Resources on the site.
The flipcharts and decks can be converted to other formats as well: pdf, Google Slides, PowerPoint, jpeg.
How do I have my students share their devices with me (Screen Share)?
Screen Share can be a most helpful and powerful teaching and learning tool to have students demonstrate their thinking and learning from their seat for the benefit of the entire class. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to see what is on your students' devices in no time. There is also a video tutorial on this topic under the tab - Video Tutorials.
Have students go to Self-Service and download the MyPromethean App, if it is not already on their device. If using a laptop or Chromebook, students should use the Promethean Screen Share Chrome extension from the Chrome store.
While they are doing this, you will select Screen Share from the Unified Menu on the ActivPanel to reveal the panel's unique 6-digit code.
Once the app is downloaded and open, students will select "Screen Share as Guest" and enter the 6-digit code on your panel and their name.
Students will then press "Start Broadcast" and you will see their name appear in the Waiting Room.
Select students to share their screens by clicking the box next to their name. You can select up to 4 students at a time. Then press the purple Share button at the bottom of the panel.
Once sharing, you can select any student screen to go full screen on the panel by tapping that screen.
Return to the Waiting Room to select different students or press X to close the session when done. Everyone is kicked out of the session when you close it.
Did you know you can conduct a videoconference through your panel instead of your desktop?
Rather than using your desktop to participate in a videoconference, especially for those school-wide morning meetings, you can use your ActivPanel. Simply plug your webcam into one of the available USB ports (the one on the back of the panel is probably your best option). Next, access the unified menu and go into the Locker. Select the Camera app and follow the onscreen prompts to connect the camera. Once connected you will see your class on the panel. (Follow these steps to connect your document camera as well - though the USB ports on the front will work best).
Now that the camera is connected, you need to enable its use while using Chromium or some other web browser. Once in Chromium, you need to access the browser settings by clicking on the 3 vertical dots in the upper right corner. Scroll down to and click Settings. Next, locate and click Site Settings. Next, locate Camera. You will notice it says "Blocked". Click Camera. Where it says "To let Chromium access your camera, also turn on camera in Android Settings", click on the hyperlink "Android Settings". Locate and click Permissions and activate the items that need to be activated (camera and microphone) by clicking the buttons on the right.
You are all set! Return to Site Settings and you should see "Ask first" under the Camera and Microphone where it once said "Blocked". You are set to use the web versions of Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams, etc.
Why does my Spinner look weird? How can I fix the appearance of my Spinner?
After the most recent update, you may notice your Spinner looks funny and unusable. Not to worry, you can easily fix this. The update to streamline the Spinner by removing the box around it caused the Spinner to look this way. To correct this, follow these steps:
Touch the black area of the Spinner to scroll (not move) it up a bit. You will notice the Spinner moving in place until you see the magnifying glass icon.
Click the Magnifying glass icon and select any size. This will correct the size/spacing of the Spinner. Nothing more needed to do except programming the Sound and Celebration. See Settings (the gear icon) for that.
How can I change the screen resolution to remove the black bars from the sides of my ActivPanel?
If you changed desktop monitors or had a new computer installed/reimaged, you may notice wide black bars on your ActivPanel. This would have also interfered with your touch screen ability. To stretch the image to the full screen, do one of two things:
1. On your desktop, change your screen resolution to the recommended resolution for the Titanium panel (3840x2160) or the highest resolution your monitor will provide. If your monitor will not go to 3840x2160, or the highest setting does not help, do the next step...
2. On desktop settings, go to Display and scroll to and click the hyperlink "Advanced Display Settings". Under Choose Display, click the dropdown menu and select "Display 2: AP7_Titanium". Go to and click the hyperlink "Display adapter properties for Display 2". Go to the and click the tab "Intel HD Graphics Control Panel". Change the Display setting to "Digital Television" and change the Scaling setting to "Scale Full Screen". Then click Apply at the bottom of the screen.
That should do the trick.
How do I update my ActivPanel?
Periodically, the firmware on the ActivPanel needs to be updated. There is no set schedule that this takes place, though it would be a good idea to check every 3-4 months or so. To do this, follow these simple steps below. For AP7, which is most panels, use the image on the left. For AP9, found in a few classrooms, especially the newer classrooms, use the image on the right. (Note - Be sure to access the panel using the "Owner" user id.)
If the "Check for Update" button is greyed out and you cannot click it, click "Quit", sign out of the current user profile, and select the "Owner" profile. Follow from Step 1.
How do I Create a User Profile and Set a Password/PIN on the ActivPanel?
If the ActivPanel in your room is used by multiple people, you may find it useful to create a separate user ID on the panel to prevent accidental loss of work. You can go a step further by creating a password or passcode so only you can access your user ID. Follow these simple steps:
On the Unified Menu, click the icon "Admin". This is the default user ID.
Next, click the gear icon to access the user ID settings.
Click "Add User" at the bottom, then "Okay" at the Add New User? prompt.
Click "Set up Now" at the Set up user now? prompt.
Go back to the Unified Menu and you will now see the "New User" icon.
Click the "New User" icon, and the Gear icon.
Click "You (New User)" , then type in the name you wish to use and click OK.
The panel will reset using the New User ID. You are all set!
To apply a password/passcode to your New User ID, do the following:
On the Unified Menu, click the user icon just created followed by the LOCK icon.
Click SCREEN LOCK, then choose either a minimum 4-digit PIN or minimum 4-character PASSWORD. Confirm your selection and you are done.
***The above instructions are only for the AP7-Titanium model. For classrooms with the AP9 model, you simply need to create a Promethean profile at https://one.prometheanworld.com. Click Sign In at the upper right corner and follow the onscreen prompts. It is probably best to use your Uniondale credentials. Your profile and any resources saved within will be accessible from any AP9 that you sign into. No need to set up a profile on the panel itself.***
The time on my ActivPanel is way off (and I would also like to change some other settings)
To change ActivPanel settings like the Time or button Sounds, access the appropriate Settings. On the AP7-Titanium, go to the Locker, then click on the Settings icon. On the AP9, go to the Applications cluster then click on the Settings icon.
From here you will locate the setting you wish to change and either choose the appropriate setting or toggle the necessary button to the correct option.
I don't hear any sound on my ActivPanel when hooked up to my computer.
If you can't hear anything through the panel, follow these simple steps. It works for AP7 and AP9.
I have a document camera, how can I use that without my desktop?
If you have a document camera, you may want to use the ActivPanel directly so your desktop is free for other things, especially if you are working on the Whiteboard. Here is how you do it.
