The vision of the UCHS Media Center is to provide current information and resources to assist students in their quest for success. The UCHS Media Center will also provide resources for educators and administrators to further the education of students.
The selection of materials for the Union County High School Library is guided by principals that originated within the American Association of Libraries and modified to the needs of the school.
The librarian will place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of material.
The librarian will identify material that stimulates growth in educational and personal knowledge for students, faculty, and staff.
The librarian will provide materials with opposing views of controversial issues so that patrons are required to think critically of material.
The library will offer a full range of material that represents various religious, political, ethnic, and cultural groups.
The librarian will identify material that enriches the school curricula.
The librarian will select material suited to the interests and maturity levels of the students.
In order for the library to meet the needs of the school community, materials must meet high standards. The follow is used in the evaluation of nonfiction material:
Reputation and authority of the author/publisher/editor
Accuracy of content
Timeliness of information
Impartial point of view from bias or presentation of various points of view
Readability and popularity for student population
Avoidance of stereotypes of individuals or groups
Additional criteria for fiction works:
Readability and interest
Characterization
Effective use of language (does not discredit material with offensive language)
Originality of material
