It all began when Frau Dunkelberger got an email in 1997 from a German principal asking if we would be interested in writing to email pen pals and possibly beginning an exchange program between our two schools. The Karolina Burger Realschule in Ludwigshafen-Mündenheim was seeking an American school to partner with and learn together. Dr. Edgar Wagner and Frau Dunkelberger sent emails back and forth (the internet and email were rather new at that time), met in Germany and eventually decided to establish a long-term school partnership. Since then, there have been yearly exchanges of students and teachers, with only a few exceptions. What a perfect way to actually experience the culture, make life-long friends, and learn the language! As well as the Karolina Burger Realschule, UHS has partnered with a few other schools, and has now been with the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium for several years.
