"The world of crystallography was forced to reevaluate its rules about forty years ago with the introduction of the concept of quasicrystals, solids with rotational symmetries forbidden to crystals, and the discovery of the first specimens in the laboratory. Since then, more than a hundred different types of quasicrystals have been synthesized in the laboratory under carefully controlled conditions. The original theory suggested that quasicrystals could be as robust and stable as ordinary crystals, perhaps even formed under natural conditions. This idea motivated a more than ten-year search for a natural quasicrystal, culminating in the discovery of an icosahedral quasicrystal in a sample preserved in the Museum of Mineralogy of the University of Florence. The Colloquium will retrace the intricate and fascinating path that led the author and his team to seek that experimental proof of the existence of quasicrystals that seemed impossible to find in nature. Spectators will be taken by the hand on a daring journey to the edge of the world to delve into the secrets of the first atomic experiment. So we are ready: let the adventure begin!"

The "Bicocca Polar Day" will take place on Wednesday 7th June 2023: it'll be a full day of conferences and posters in which polar sciences will be the protagonists. During this important event, the EuroCold laboratory celebrates its 10th birthday and it will open to the public with a series of guided tours in which you will be able to see an ice core and listen to the experiences of our researchers.
In order to participate in the event, we ask you to fill in and send the form. If you also want to take part in a visit to the laboratory, you will receive an email confirming your booking within a couple of days.
We're waiting for you!
