Study and development of trapping and cooling systems using UV laser radiation
University of Florence - Italy
The experimental group of Prof. Nicola Poli is looking for candidates for 12 Months Post-Doc position at the Physics Department in Sesto Fiorentino (Florence) to work on Study and development of trapping and cooling systems using UV laser radiation in the frame of the EU Project UV-QUANT.
Project Description: The main objective of the research project is the study and development of atomic interferometers based on ultracold cadmium and strontium atoms. In particular, schemes involving forbidden intercombination transitions will be studied, together with large momentum transfer techniques to increase the sensitivity of the interferometer as an inertial sensor. To increase the efficiency of these techniques, modern techniques for cooling atoms close to absolute zero will also be investigated. These systems will be used for very high precision measurements of gravity and gravity gradients with the prospect of application to tests of fundamental physics. The activity will also include the construction of the experimental apparatus necessary for the research and the implementation of existing systems (high-power laser systems in the VIS-UV region) with ultra-high vacuum systems for trapping and cooling atoms
We offer a gross salary of 24300 EUR yearly, with minimal taxes for people coming from other countries.
