International Symposium D.T. SUZUKI: BEYOND CULTURE

This event represents the first Italian academic symposium dedicated to the figure of Daisetz Teitarō Suzuki. Organized by the Department of Humanities at the University of Ferrara under the Scientific Direction of Professor Federica Sgarbi (Doshisha University, Kyoto) and Professor Matteo Vincenzo D’Alfonso (University of Ferrara), the initiative is held under the prestigious patronage of The Eastern Buddhist Society (Otani University, Kyoto), the Japan Foundation - Istituto Giapponese di Cultura, the Consulate-General of Japan in Milan, the Study Center of the Italian Buddhist Union, and the Italian Philosophical Society (SFI).

Commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of Suzuki’s passing and set within the distinguished framework of the celebrations for the 160th anniversary of official diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan, the symposium aims to honor the work and thought of the scholar who pioneered the dissemination of Zen in the West. Particular emphasis will be placed on the interreligious and intercultural philosophical dialogue that he masterfully established with the preeminent figures of the 20th-century intellectual and philosophical landscape.

The scientific project is structured in two distinct phases: an in-person session, to be held on March 20, 2026, at the Sala dell’Arengo in Ferrara, featuring the participation of renowned scholars in the fields of philosophy and Japanese studies from the most prestigious Italian and Japanese universities; and a subsequent international online session, scheduled from April to December 2026, comprising thematic lectures delivered by the world’s leading experts on Suzuki’s thought. To complement the program, the event includes the inauguration of the first bibliographical exhibition dedicated to the author, curated by the Scientific Direction to provide rigorous documentary support to the research presented.

Simposio Internazionale D.T. SUZUKI: OLTRE LA CULTURA

L’evento si configura come il primo simposio accademico italiano dedicato alla figura di Daisetz Teitarō Suzuki. 

Organizzato dal Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell'Università di Ferrara sotto la Direzione Scientifica della Prof.ssa Federica Sgarbi (Doshisha University, Kyoto) e del Prof. Matteo Vincenzo D’Alfonso (Università di Ferrara), l'iniziativa gode del prestigioso patrocinio della The Eastern Buddhist Society (Otani University, Kyoto), della Japan Foundation - Istituto Giapponese di Cultura, del Consolato Generale del Giappone a Milano, del Centro Studi dell'Unione Buddhista Italiana e della Società Filosofica Italiana (SFI).

In occasione del sessantesimo anniversario della scomparsa di Suzuki e inserito nel prestigioso contesto delle celebrazioni per il 160° anniversario delle relazioni ufficiali tra Italia e Giappone, il simposio si propone di celebrare l’opera e il pensiero dello studioso che ha divulgato lo Zen in Occidente. 

Particolare attenzione sarà rivolta al dialogo filosofico interreligioso e interculturale ch’egli sapientemente instaurò con i maggiori protagonisti della scena intellettuale e filosofica del XX secolo.

Il progetto scientifico si articola in due fasi distinte: una sessione in presenza, che si terrà il 20 marzo 2026 presso la Sala dell’Arengo a Ferrara con la partecipazione di rinomati studiosi di ambito filosofico e nipponistico provenienti dalle più prestigiose università italiane e giapponesi, e una successiva sessione internazionale online, prevista da aprile a dicembre 2026, con interventi tematici tenuti dai massimi esperti mondiali del pensiero di Suzuki. 

A completamento del programma, l'evento include l'inaugurazione della prima mostra bibliografica dedicata all'autore, curata dalla Direzione Scientifica per offrire un supporto documentale rigoroso alla ricerca esposta.

会議 「鈴木大拙: 文化を超えて」文化の境界を超えた目覚めの経験

本シンポジウムは、イタリアにおいて鈴木大拙に焦点を当てた初のアカデミックな学術会議として開催されます。フェラーラ大学人文学部の主催により、スガルビ・フェデリカ教授（京都・同志社大学）およびマッテオ・ヴィンチェンツォ・ダルフォンソ教授（フェラーラ大学）の学術監修のもと企画された本プロジェクトは、東方仏教徒協会（大谷大学)、国際交流基金（日本文化会館）、在ミラノ日本国総領事館、イタリア仏教連合会研究センター、ならびにイタリア哲学会の多大なる後援を受けて実施されます。

鈴木大拙没後60周年を記念し、また日伊国交樹立160周年記念事業の格調高い枠組みの中に位置づけられる本シンポジウムは、禅思想を欧米に広めた先駆者である大拙の業績と思想を顕彰するこ とを目的としています。特に、彼が20世紀の主要な知性や哲学者たちとの間に巧みに築き上げた、宗教間および文化間の哲学的対話に深い関心が寄せられます。

本学術プロジェクトは二部構成で展開され、まず2026年3月20日にフェラーラ市のサラ・デッラレンゴにて開催される対面セッションでは、日本およびイタリアの著名な大学から哲学および日本学分野の第一線で活躍する研究者が集結いたします。続く2026年4月から12月にかけてはオンライン形式の国際セッションが行われ、鈴木大拙研究における世界的な権威を招聘し、多角的なテーマに基づいた講演を継続的に配信いたします。また、本プログラムの締めくくりとして、著者（鈴木大拙）に捧げられたイタリア初となる書誌展示会の開催が予定されており、発表される学術研究を厳格な資料的側面から裏付けるべく、学術監修者の指揮により構成されています。
