The deformations of associative algebras were introduced and studied by M. Gerstenhaber. 

In our talk, we shall show how this concept can be interpreted and extended using the theory of coalgebras as the primary tool. 

In this broader context, we shall see that deformations are governed by a cohomology theory closely related to Hochschild cohomology, as in the classical case (joint work with A. Makhlouf).
