Research interests

My main research interests relate to the investigation and implementation of new techniques in the fields of evolutionary computation and machine learning. Specifically, I use evolutionary computation based techniques to  solve problems in many fields, including feature selection, Bayesan networks, pattern recognition,  and ensemble methods.  In machine learning, my research is focused on the development of applications to deal with real-life problems. These problems include detection and prediction of neurodegenerative diseases trhough handwriting analysis, writer identification in ancient manuscripts, and water pollution detection.

Research projects

• 2020-:  work package supervisor within the research project “Greek and Latin Literary Papyri from Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Fayum (4th BC – 7th AD): Texts, Contexts, Readers”. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). 

• 2019-: research project “C4E Crowd for the Enviroment: Monitoring of illegal spills through the synergistic use of advanced technologies and spontaneous citizen reports”.  The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), within the EU funding program PON “Ricerca e Innovazione” 2014-2020. 

• 2017-2019: work package supervisor within the research project Handwriting Analysis against Neuromuscular Disease (HAND), for the early diagnosys and monitoring of the Neuromuscular Diseases. The project was funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). 

• 2017-2018: research project “Simplicity: an integrated hardware/software platform for the promotion and enhancement of a Natural Shopping Center”.  The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), within the EU funding program PON “Ricerca e Innovazione” 2014-2020. 

• 2016: research project for the development of mobile applications for authentication and data protection. The project was carried out in collaboration with TIM company. 

• 2011: FP7 European research project  “Active Distribution network with full integration of Demand and distributed energy RESourceS” (ADDRESS). 

• 2009: research project for the development of an application for the automatic reading of postal address. The project was carried out in collaboration with Elsag Datamat company. 

• 2008: research project for the development of an application for the automatic reading of handwritten filled modules. The project was carried out in collaboration with Recogniform Technologies company. 

Teaching 

I have taught many courses on computer science at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio since 2006. Currently, I teach the following courses (in Italian):
