Gloria Mazzone received her degree in Chemistry in 2006 and the Ph.D. in Methods in Inorganic Chemistry in 2010 from the University of Calabria under the supervision of prof. Emilia Sicilia. She was post-doc in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies of the same university from 2010 to 2018. Then she moved to L'Ecole National de Chimie de Paris for one post-doc year.
She is member of the Società Chimica Italiana (SCI) since 2007. She was elected member of the governing council of the SCI Young Chemist Group (2016-2018) to represent the Division of Inorganic Chemistry and since 2019 she is member of the governing council of SCI Division of Chemical Theory and Computation. She was in the organizing and scientific committees of several national and international conferences. She is in the teachers’ board of the Doctorate School in Translational Medicine of the University of Calabria (since XXXVI cycle).
She is author of more than 90 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. She is reviewer for several international scientific journals belonging to the Royal Society of Chemistry, Elsevier, American Chemical Society, Wiley, Springer and MDPI. She was editor of three themed collections in Applied Science, Molecules and Frontiers in Chemistry. She is in the editorial board of Applied Science since 2021. She was recognised as an outstanding reviewer for Chemical Science in 2022.
Her research activity is focused on the application of computational tools for studying chemical properties, processes and phenomena in complex chemical systems, with particular reference to reaction mechanisms, molecular interactions in solution, and photophysical behaviour. The main topics and accomplishments are in the following area:
- Gas-phase and homogeneous catalysis (metal complexes, organocatalysts).
- Mechanism of action of anticancer drugs.
- Mechanism of action of antioxidants (natural and synthetic).
- Study and design of photosensitizers, organic and inorganic, for applications in photodynamic therapy and photo-activated chemotherapy.
Bachelor Degree
Study of the photophysical properties of photosensitisers used in photodynamic therapy.
Elementary mechanisms of action of natural and synthetic antioxidant molecules.
Reaction mechanisms of organocatalysts.
Study of interactions in host-guest systems.
Master Degree
Design and reactivity of metal-based photosensitisers for applications in photodynamic therapy and photo-activated chemotherapy.
Detailed study of free radical scavenging reactions by natural and synthetic antioxidant molecules.
Reaction mechanisms of metal catalysts for the formation of products of industrial interest.
