CRIPTA Aula Magna.
The Crypt is three-nave semi-basement environment which is an integral part of the Bramantesque building complex, from which the reconstruction of the monastery of S. Ambrogio began in 1497, promoted by Cardinal Ascanio Sforza for the Cistercians.
This environment is directly connected to the one above, a single hall (Aula Magna), to the monastery by a fifteenth-century staircase (Scala D), and to the exterior by a small staircase, now walled up, which led to the icehouse (Aula Bontadini).
The Mastro book of 1498 established the construction "per gli anditi de sotto et de sopra refectoria et libraria". It is therefore possible to hypothesize that in Bramante's original design, the Crypt was intended to be the refectory. Above it, there was supposed to be the Library, which was later transformed in refectory by 1545, the year Callisto Piazza painted the Wedding at Cana.
