I'm the Principal Investigator (PI) of the high relevance national project PRIN-PNRR 2022 entitled "SIGNUM: Study of mobile phone siGNals for the evalUation of the interconnections between Mobility and the environment in Lombardia" (CUP: F53D23010910001) that has been founded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.
The accessibility of big and complex data drawn from sensors (such as mobile phone signals) is becoming increasingly essential in many fields of study since they allow a dynamic and fine-grained representation of the investigated phenomena. In light of the growing interest in the nexus between mobility and the environment, the SIGNUM project is dedicated to assessing the links between human activities - such as movements and vehicular traffic - natural disasters, and air quality in the Lombardy region. This is achieved through the development, validation, and application of robust spatiotemporal statistical models and methods along with cutting-edge mobility data.
Me and my colleagues Francesco Finazzi and Alessandro Fassò (Università degli Studi di Bergamo) are collaborating with Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca (Francesco Biancalani) and the Università degli Studi di Brescia (Maurizio Carpita and Paola Zuccolotto) to fulfill the following goals:
to develop statistical methods to estimate and predict the amount of traffic in specific times and areas of interest using mobile phone data.
to investigate the relation between mobility, pollution and natural disasters by matching the existing indices on air quality and pollutant emissions with the estimated traffic data obtained from the application of the developed methods to Lombardia.
