The growing global population and economic development pose major challenges for ensuring sufficient water, energy, and food supply. Since the 1980s, global value chains (GVCs) have significantly influenced agri-food production, offering opportunities for rural development but also increasing pressure on water and energy resources. This research, based on the concept of "virtual trade," aims to map and quantify the water and energy embedded in agri-food trade over time and space. The findings will support the development of more sustainable resource management strategies across both developed and developing economies.
