What is the ASSIST Approach?

The Argument-based Strategies for STEM Infused Science Teaching (ASSIST) approach provides a framework for developing engaging science learning environments at all grade levels. The approach is built on the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) and combines information from three main research supported areas: Argument-Based Inquiry (ABI) teaching approaches, Multimodal Communication (MMC), and characteristics of effective STEM learning environments. A three-year Title IIA Improving Teacher Quality grant, a two-year Math-Science Partnership (MSP) grant through the state of Iowa Board of Regents and a Center for Educational Transformation (CET) grant is currently supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of the approach. In addition, feedback from practicing teachers, curriculum developers, AEA consultants, and higher education faculty members is helping develop tools for teachers to better understand and implement the approach in practical ways. Finally, ongoing work is helping develop ways to utilize the approach as a way to implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
