C. H. A. N. G. E. stands for "Challenging Harmful Assault Narratives through Group Expression". The University of Northern Iowa’s (UNI) Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC) is working to reduce and end sexual assault stigmas and myths on our campus. The goal of "The Art of CHANGE" is to give survivors and supporters a space to share their creative works concerning these hurtful myths, and to continue awareness and prevention efforts at UNI. The exhibit was conceptualized, created, and implemented by Karrah Bates, the 2020-21 Sexual Assault Prevention Graduate Assistant for the OCRC.
The included works are by UNI students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The University of Northern Iowa's OCRC works to prevent misconduct through the areas of campus education, communication, and campus climate. Prevention efforts include providing presentations to classes and organizations on topics like advocacy, campus policy, and reporting responsibilities; connecting students with sexual assault advocacy and mental health resources; and spreading awareness of current stats and climates through campus and social media initiatives. Along with prevention efforts, the OCRC is also where students go to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, with the potential to open an official investigation. Head over to civilrights.uni.edu, or visit our office at Gilchrist 117, to learn more about the services OCRC offers UNI students.
These hand prints are of survivors, supporters, friends. People whose lives were unwillingly changed by sexual assault. The effect doesn't end with the incident; the stigmas, the guilt, and the fear can linger. Our loved ones, community, and culture can all impact how we view assault. Whether knowingly or not, sexual assault affects everyone. By placing our hands together, we can challenge these harmful assault narratives. Together, we can make a change.
