In addition to the IPE Honors Distinction, I'm involved in the Care for the Underserved Pathways AHEC Scholars Program and Reproductive Health Leadership Program, I would like to utilized my education to weave advocacy, policy, and access for historically marginalized communities in Maine. (This is an example of a presentation I created to show the intersections of identity in these areas.)
In addition to the Care for the Underserved Pathways AHEC Scholars Program and my election into the Reproductive Health Leadership Program, for my Leadership, Administration, and Supervision course, I researched and imagined breaking down barriers to women's healthcare in the future in our community. (This is an example of a group presentation I collaborated on to showcase what childcare access in-house, choice, and a patient-majority board might look like in changing healthcare.)
For my Care for the Underserved Pathways AHEC Scholars Program capstone, I presented on my year-long clinical experience in Palliative Medicine as a Social Work student within the context of IPE improving not only the provider-to-provider experience but for patient care writ large.
Patients and their families facing challenges associated with life-threatening illnesses, whether physical, psychological, social, or spiritual, can see improvements in their quality of life with quality palliative care. However, only about 14% of people worldwide receive the palliative care they need.
Although palliative care is increasingly being provided at home by family members, the majority of patients still die in hospital settings.
Of note, reasons for the lack of access range from adequate programs, resources, and training on palliative care among interdisciplinary healthcare professionals.
