Discussion questions
After listening to Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me by Daniel Beaty, answer the discussion questions below:
- What does Daniel's family look like?
- Daniel’s father is physically absent as he grows up. But he is present in other ways. Think about the ways his father is still there in Daniel’s life. Have you ever been away from a parent or a caretaker for a long time? If so, how did that make you feel?
Daniel and his father would play Knock Knock every morning. What’s your favorite game to play with your family? Or do you have any family traditions? If so, how would you feel if they suddenly stopped?

Directions: Today you will create your own Book of families. Your book can show the different members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends, pets, etc.) or it can show a day in the life of your family (daily routines and activities).
For this activity, you will need to either collect pictures or draw pictures of your families. Don't forget to define who is in your family! Once you are done collecting or drawing pictures, write one or two sentences explaining the picture and the importance of family.
