Activating Prior Knowledge

After listening to The Great Big Book of Families, think about the different kinds of families that are portrayed in this book.

  • What types of families represented in this book? Do you see a family or home that looks like yours?

  • How are the families or the way they live different from your family? How are they the same?

  • What are some important things in many families? What makes a family?

Discussion questions

After listening to Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me by Daniel Beaty, answer the discussion questions below:

  • What does Daniel's family look like?

  • Daniel’s father is physically absent as he grows up. But he is present in other ways. Think about the ways his father is still there in Daniel’s life. Have you ever been away from a parent or a caretaker for a long time? If so, how did that make you feel?

  • Daniel and his father would play Knock Knock every morning. What’s your favorite game to play with your family? Or do you have any family traditions? If so, how would you feel if they suddenly stopped?

Day two

After Reading activity

Activity: Create a book about your family!

Materials:

  • Digital ebook - Book Creator

    • Camera or cell phone

    • Pictures of your family

  • Book

    • 4 sheets of black computer paper. (Fold all four pages in half and staple down the middle to make an eight-page book).

    • Crayons/Markers/Colored Pencils

    • Pencil

Directions: Today you will create your own Book of families. Your book can show the different members of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends, pets, etc.) or it can show a day in the life of your family (daily routines and activities).

For this activity, you will need to either collect pictures or draw pictures of your families. Don't forget to define who is in your family! Once you are done collecting or drawing pictures, write one or two sentences explaining the picture and the importance of family.

Show someone at home your family book, and describe what you created for practice. Then, have them video record the illustration of your name while you describe what you created. Send your video recording to: lwiley@sitinmovement.org (International Civil Rights Center and Museum). We will feature some of your work on our website!
