January 2022 Announcement: Upcoming virtual SIG meeting on February 21st at 6pm EST focused on Masculinities and Coaching (abstract below; zoom link emailed).
The coaching career of Urban Meyer is symbolic of the nature of masculinity in sport and how it can be enacted within teams and organizations. The hiring of former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle, the alleged kicking of former Jaguar Josh Lambo, and the defending of Zach Smith when he was coaching at Ohio State are a few examples of controversies surrounding Meyer. One could argue that many of Coach Meyer’s behaviors are common in professional and competitive sport and are indicative of overconformity to a masculine ethic that values individual achievement and responsibility above the needs and well-being of the community. Additionally, it was recently revealed that during Meyer’s time at Ohio State, photos of Trayvon Martin were used in team meetings to discourage football players from wearing hoodies - highlighting the oppressive ways in which masculinities in sport often interact with Whiteness and White supremacy. In this conversation sponsored by AASP’s Men and Masculinities SIG, we will consider how men (in particular) and women are bound to certain masculine codes and displays of emotion in order to obtain cultural legitimacy in sport (Giazitzoglu, 2018). In attending to these considerations, the facilitators will define hegemonic masculinity, and illustrate how place or physical spaces, and the need to belong, structure how men perform masculinity. Then, as a group, attendees will consider how expressions of different forms of masculine behaviors or performances may provide us with cultural legitimacy but may also limit the work we do as consultants. Lastly, attendees will examine ways to create transformative communities that welcome possibilities, ownership/accountability, dissent, commitment, and allow for us to bring our gifts and talents as consultants to the table.
