Play and Sandtray Therapy with Clients Impacted by Shame

Session Description

Shame is an intense systemic emotional state based on the distortion that one is fundamentally flawed. Clients experiencing shame need a therapeutic experience that is both safe and nontoxic. Expressive interventions, such as play and sandtray therapy, provide a kinesthetic experience and therapeutic distance that helps clients process shame and experience abreaction in a free and protected environment. (Attendees should plan on bringing 25-30 sandtray miniature figures.)


Learning Objectives


Participants will be able to:

  • describe shame as applied to play and sandtray therapy clients;

  • discuss the application of expressive interventions for play and sandtray therapy clients; and

  • list various expressive interventions for use with clients dealing with issues of shame.


Brief Bio


Daniel Sweeney, PhD, LMFT, LPC, RPT-S is a Professor and Clinical Director in the Graduate School of Counseling, and Director of the NW Center for Play Therapy Studies at George Fox University in Portland, Oregon. A past president of the Association for Play Therapy, Daniel also maintains a small private practice. He has presented, nationally and internationally, on the topics of play and sandtray therapy and trauma interventions. Daniel is author or co-author of several books, including Sandtray Therapy: A Practical Manual and Group Play Therapy: A Dynamic Approach.
