The first goal that I set for myself as a communication consultant is to utilize my writing background in order to support the capstone courses I was assigned. I wanted to create class activities, written assignments, and discussion prompts that helped students better engage with course content and allowed them to participate in skill-building exercises related to their discipline. Throughout the semester, I was able to coordinate with both of my capstone instructors in creating several discussion boards on Canvas that were centered on communication practices. I combined video examples with assigned readings and created prompts that engaged with current class discussion on professional presentations. In total, I created four separate discussion boards relating material learned in class with application outside of class.

The second goal that I set for myself as a communication consultant is to improve upon my oral communication abilities through public speaking opportunities. In this case, I wanted to craft a number of supporting presentations that aligned with current course content and would help illuminate certain topics. Once again, I was able to coordinate with both of my capstone instructors in creating a number of slideshow presentations that encourages students to practice relevant skills needed in the workforce. I utilized PowerPoint and broke down different elements of an elevator speech, combined a video example, and assigned an in-class exercise so that students had the opportunity to create and practice their own elevator pitches. In total, I created two presentations designed to engage students in their learning and facilitate assignments outside of the classroom.
For my third and final goal as a communication consultant I wanted to accomplish something more nuanced in my role: to build rapport with the students I am supporting through clear, effective communication practices over a variety of media. To this end, I wanted to begin the semester by clearly establishing myself as both a presence and student resource in and out of class, and be clear that I can make myself available through both face-to-face meetings and email. As the semester has progressed, I have been able to build relationships with students to the point where they feel comfortable approaching or contacting me on any part of their own ePortfolio development. I have offered technical advice and instructions on not only structure and organization but also content development. Over the course of the semester, I have been able to build rapport and have had over a dozen students contact me outside appointment times for general support or feedback.
