Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) Trainer | January 2022 - present

Department of Public Health Sciences | UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services | University of North Carolina at Charlotte

As part of the SAMHA campus suicide prevention grant CAPS and CHHS are running, CAPS has been rolling out QPR (suicide awareness and prevention training). Joining the QPR team as a campus member involves becoming a certified QPR trainer.

What is QPR? QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) is a 90-minute training intended to further develop the Niner Nation Community of Care by teaching students, staff, and faculty how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, including verbal, behavioral, and situational clues. The training provides guidelines on how to compassionately Question a person about suicidal thoughts, Persuade them to get help, and Refer them to campus and/or local resources.

What is involved? Training to become an instructor is self-paced and grant funds will cover the fee. Once certified, we ask instructors to commit to teaching one QPR session each semester (including summer), or three sessions throughout the year. In addition to the time for instructing the class, the preparation time per presentation is typically an hour. Not including instructor training, the time commitment is minimally 10.5 hours per year. This time commitment is critical to reaching goals related to sessions offered and the number of community members trained. This is a great service opportunity for faculty especially interested in mental health, education, or a variety of other areas.
