"You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence."
Octavia Butler
Final Writing Project (30%): In lieu of a final exam, you will complete a final writing project. For this project, you will produce an original piece of academic writing appropriate for your discipline; such pieces may include (but are not limited to) a research article, a poster presentation, a thesis or dissertation chapter, a book review, statement of purpose,...You will work on this project throughout the semester and are expected to meet deadlines along the way.
Writing Log Project (30%): Each week you will complete a log detailing how much time you spent writing; you will then write a short reflection about your weekly progress, post it to the class discussion board, and respond on several of your classmates' reflections.
Lay-Focused Presentation of Research (25%): You will give an oral presentation based on your research or an aspect of your discipline; the presentation will be designed for non-specialist audience. This means that your talk and your slide deck must appeal and be accessible to those from a wide-range of academic disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM.
Participation (15%): Participation is your active engagement in course activities both during class time (e.g., class discussions, in-class writings, and group work) and outside of class time (e.g., writing conferences and our Canvas discussion forum); it also includes how prepared you are for class, i.e., completing and reflecting upon the readings and homework in advance. Active participation in this class is expected, encouraged, and rewarded.
