I started LANG 120 this year after taking both AP Language and Composition and AP Literature. I figured there would not be too much to learn because I had already done college level courses on Language. However, I was able to learn a lot throughout this course that I did not learn in the previous AP classes I took in High School. I developed storytelling skills, learned how to engage with the audience, identified the audience I was writing for, and learned how to write professionally but also how to write in an engaging way depending on who my audience was.
During this semester I have created an infographic, personal essay, and solutions piece. All of which I learned different skills from. I had created an infographic before but I was never properly taught how to create these. Infographics are typically engaging with the audience and not as professional as some other pieces. My infographic however was writing skills used within the business major and field. I knew I had to create this piece to be engaging but also professional because of the topic. This had challenged me because I had to combine the two to make it professional enough for business yet still engaging enough that someone would actually read through it in less than a minute.
I have created a personal essay about my experience on the Blue Ridge Pre Orientation I went on. I learned how to identify my audience and how to engage with my readers while writing this piece. At first my piece had taken turns throughout the essay and I had to do some revisions to edit it and keep it all concise. After a few edits and updates it was completed. I was able to tell a story to my readers and keep them engaged. I developed storytelling skills through this project that would be beneficial for my major in business.
The last piece I created was a solutions piece. This is the piece that I am most proud of and I believe people can learn from. I changed my mind on what I wanted to create several times before finally landing on the creation of social media slides. I had a lot of fun with this project and I also got a bit frustrated. I was not frustrated at the assignment but I was upset about the things I discovered through my research. We choose a topic that we would be passionate about, a topic we must find a solution to. I was able to provide statistics and important facts that would grab and hold my audiences attention but also educate them on this topic.
