UNC's articles of incorporation define its legal status as a non-sectarian, private educational institution, establishing its operational framework. The Administrative Manual further clarifies the university's legal standing and the Board of Trustees' authority, as detailed in the corporation's bylaws.
A core guiding principle is the development of mature, responsible students capable of applying scientific inquiry and specialized competencies within their chosen professions. The OBE Manual reinforces this commitment, emphasizing UNC's goal of producing individuals who excel not only professionally but also as active citizens and global contributors.

Its mission is to expand opportunities and prepare individuals for meaningful lives through empowering education and a supportive environment.
