Abstract: Design from the South is the expression of a new epistemology. An epistemology in which design actions are oriented to social transformation in search of social equity and sustainability, paving the way to design justice. This presentation shows two examples of the way in which this epistemology of design sprouts from the community itself.

Event: The 4th Conference of the International Association for Cognitive Semiotics, IACS. Semiotic Complexities, Theory & Analysis
Place: Aachen, Alemania
Organizers: RWTH Aachen University
Abstract: I presented a model of six levels of agency based on theoretical and methodological principles of cognitive semiotics. The model aims to expand the scope of cognitive neuroscience, improving the way in which agency is construed. Neuroscientists are proficient at measuring neural activity in relation to simple bodily movements, and they have been providing valuable findings for understanding the lower layers of agency from the anatomical point of view. Nevertheless, the findings are difficult to integrate within a more situated, ecological approach. I propose a model that allows higher correlational reliability and ecological validity by triangulating the findings with multiple perspectives of analysis.

Event: Design + Context: Thirteenth International Conference on Design Principles & Practices
Place: Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation
Organizers: St. Petersburg University
Abstract: I proposed a new definition of 'semiotics of design' (aka design semiotics) for overcoming the limitations of linguistic explanations of artefacts' meaning. The definition put the emphasis on the agent (the user) in context for the semiotic analyses. The semiotic analysis of the context is useful for understanding the circumstances in which agents will use artefacts, whether it is an established context or a new context proposed by the designers.

Event: Antiquity TAG, 42nd Conference of the Theoretical Archaeology Group 2021. Sesion 7: Τhe Lives of Things in Human Mindscapes: Developing Approaches to Cognition in Archaeology
Place: University of Leicester, UK
Organizers: Theoretical Archaeology Group, TAG; University of Leicester
Abstract: I presented the main points of a research paper co-authored with Göran Sonesson in which we propose a cognitive semiotic study of the agency of artefacts in Amazonia. We offer an alternative approach to artefacts’ agency based on the human-unique capacity for designing. We coined the notion of enhanced agency for the prosthetic incorporation of artefacts into the agentive capabilities of human agents.
