Mid-Semester Check-in

It's not too late to check in with your students about how your classes are going for them. Faculty Affairs put this toolkit together to help you with having these important conversations about faculty teaching and student learning.

Mid-semester check-ins provide faculty with a way to touch base with students during the semester. By surveying students, especially after a chance to evaluate evidence of learning, faculty and students alike can gain practical and actionable insights about what is working as well as recommendations for improving learning and teaching.

Many faculty check-in with their students during the semester. Here are some of the reasons this is helpful for faculty.

  • Understand students' sense of connection to the instructor, course, other students, and learning.

  • Support and enhance student learning and engagement by asking for input and making mid-course corrections as needed.

  • Cultivate or extend a commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Model reflective practice and demonstrate their care and commitment to students' success.

  • Help students learn how to give constructive feedback.
