Faculty of Science and Natural Resources

Universiti Malaysia Sabah

Prof. Dr. Justin Sentian, an esteemed atmospheric scientist, currently leads the Climate Change Research Group at the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He holds the position of a research fellow at the university's Centre of Disaster Studies and Water Research Unit. Previously, he served as the Director of the UMS EcoCampus Management Centre (2014-2017) and UMS Centre of Industrial and Community Network (2017-2018). In 2009, he was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue his master's degree in atmospheric science from the University of East Anglia (UK). He also received a scholarship from the Government of Malaysia to complete his doctoral studies in atmospheric chemistry and climate change at Lancaster University (UK) in 2009. Having wealth of experience, prior to his work at UMS, he worked as an Environmental Control Officer at the Federal Department of Environment for seven years.

Most of his research and publication contributions span across atmospheric chemistry, climate change, air quality, meteorology, environmental pollution modeling, and environmental impact assessment. He has presented over 100 papers in international and national conferences, seminars, and workshops, delivering numerous plenary lectures on his research. He has an impressive publication record, with over 80 peer-reviewed research papers published in renowned international and national journals, in addition to five books and chapters in books. Throughout his career, he has established robust international research collaborations and partnerships with renowned research groups and institutions in Europe, Asia and South America. Currently, he is involved in a research project funded by Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM), in collaboration with Santiago University, Chile, examining ozone, halocarbon, and climate change over the Antarctica Peninsula.

In addition, he is a registered consultant with the Department of Environment and actively involved in various environmental consultancy works that related to environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental auditing (EA), and environmental management plan (EMP). In his engagement as a climate change specialist for the Asian Development Bank, he contributed his expertise to assess climate change vulnerability along the northern and eastern coast of Sabah, specifically aiding projects in Tun Mustapha Park and Turtle Island Park. He has made significant contributions on a local level, specifically in the formulation of the State of Sabah Environmental Policy, State Environmental Action Plan, and State Monitoring Plan, with a primary focus on the air quality and climate change sectors. He recently finished working with the Asia Foundation on a project that evaluated how inclusive the green economy in Sabah is, with a specific focus on indigenous groups. WWF also engaged him to conduct a study on the potential for developing biofuel crops through forest restoration in Sabah.

ABSTRACT

INTERSECTION OF CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS, VULNERABILITY, AND RESILIENCE: INSIGHTS FROM MALAYSIA

The paper presents the interconnected effects of climate change impacts, vulnerability, and resilience in Malaysia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this paper explore how climate change is impacting the country and how various communities are responding. This paper reveal that Malaysia is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as increased temperatures, more frequent extreme weather events, heat waves, and rising sea levels. Despite these significant challenges, this paper also highlight instances of resilience and adaptation, such as the formulation of community-based plans for managing climate-related risks. This paper also underscores the importance of addressing climate change in Malaysia and developing strategies to build resilience when confronted with environmental threats.
