Prof. Dr. Muzafar Shah Habibullah


Muzafar Shah Habibullah is a Professor and a former staff member of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. His specialisation includes Applied Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Banking. His current research interests are in the areas of: Economics of Crime; Underground (shadow) Economy; Economics of Climate Change; Natural Disasters and Environmental Quality; Regional Convergence (total factor productivity growth); Defence Economics; Remittances and Immigrants; Economics of War and Terrorism; Economics of Religion; Fertility; Biodiversity; Governance; and Happiness.


As of 2018, he has published 342 journal articles, 8 books, 7 edited books, 61 chapters in books, and 118 chapters in proceedings. Several of his works have been published in Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, as well as SCOPUS journals. For his excellent research work, he was awarded the “Anugerah Karyawan Putra Cemerlang” in 2002, Vice Chancellor Fellowship Award in 2007, EUREKA Medal for the Award of Excellence in Research in 2008, and Research and Innovation Award in 2009.


Apart from research activities, he has supervised numerous students at various levels. He has supervised 30 PhD students, 3 Master of Science students, more than 30 Master of Economics students, and 60 students at the undergraduate level. He is currently supervising 7 PhD students. He has been appointed as an internal and external examiner for Master’s and PhD’s theses; and also as a curriculum reviewer for various universities.
