Every day, tonnes of fruit and vegetable peels are discarded from homes, school canteens, restaurants, and markets. Most people see them as nothing more than kitchen waste destined for the landfill. However, a team of innovative students from SMK St. Patrick, Membakut saw something different—a valuable natural resource waiting to be transformed.
Their award-winning innovation, ORA PAPER, demonstrates how creativity, science, and environmental awareness can come together to solve a real-world problem.
Developed for the Borneo Solid Waste Management Innovation Competition (BSWMIC) 2026, ORA PAPER is an environmentally friendly paper produced entirely from discarded fruit and vegetable skins, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional paper manufacturing that relies heavily on wood pulp.
Seeing Opportunity in Everyday Waste
The idea behind ORA PAPER began with a simple observation. Every day, large quantities of organic waste are generated from school canteens, local markets, and households. While these materials are biodegradable, they often end up in landfills where they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions as they decompose.
Recognising that many fruit and vegetable peels still contain strong natural fibres, the students wondered whether these fibres could be repurposed into a useful product.
Instead of allowing these resources to go to waste, they explored a way to convert them into durable sheets of paper, creating a practical solution that supports sustainable resource management while reducing dependence on forest-based raw materials.

Unlike conventional paper, which requires wood pulp harvested from trees, ORA PAPER utilises fibres extracted from discarded fruit and vegetable skins.

Sometimes, the greatest innovations begin with the things we throw away.
Healthy soil, thriving crops, productive livestock, and clean aquaculture systems are the foundation of food security. Yet modern agriculture faces increasing challenges, from declining soil quality and rising production costs to environmental pollution caused by excessive chemical use.
Students from Kolej Vokasional Keningau saw these challenges as an opportunity for innovation. Their solution, EMAS (Effective Microorganism EM4), demonstrates how naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms can improve agricultural productivity while protecting the environment.
Presented at the Borneo Solid Waste Management Innovation Competition (BSWMIC) 2026, EMAS impressed judges with its practical applications across multiple sectors, earning recognition for both its innovation and potential impact.
Nature's Workforce
Microorganisms are often invisible to the naked eye, yet they play an essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Certain beneficial microbes help decompose organic matter, recycle nutrients, suppress harmful pathogens, and improve environmental quality.
The students behind EMAS recognised the enormous potential of these microorganisms and developed an effective microbial solution that can be easily applied in agriculture, livestock farming, and aquaculture.

Eco Fertilizer: Turning Bread Waste into Plant Nutrition
Every day, unsold and leftover bread contributes to unnecessary food waste.
The students developed Eco Fertilizer, an organic compost produced from discarded bread that would otherwise be thrown away.
Instead of becoming landfill waste, the bread is transformed into a nutrient-rich fertiliser that improves soil health and supports sustainable gardening and agriculture.
This innovation demonstrates how food waste can become a valuable agricultural resource.
Bawang Bloom: Giving Onion Skins a New Purpose
Onion skins are another household waste item that is often overlooked.
Through fermentation, the students converted discarded onion skins into Bawang Bloom, a liquid organic fertiliser formulated to stimulate flowering and support healthier plant development.
The project encourages households and gardeners to rethink kitchen waste by recognising its potential value in sustainable agriculture.
Bio Arab Tea: Innovation for Health and Wellness
Sustainability extends beyond waste management—it also includes improving human wellbeing.
Bio Arab Tea is a probiotic beverage developed through a controlled fermentation process that promotes beneficial microorganisms associated with digestive health.
The project demonstrates how biotechnology and food innovation can be combined to create products that support healthier lifestyles while making productive use of natural ingredients.
Multipurpose Table: Recycling into Everyday Utility
The fourth innovation highlights another important principle of sustainability: extending the life of materials through reuse.
The students designed a Multipurpose Table constructed from recycled materials, creating an affordable and functional product suitable for homes, classrooms, and community spaces.

🌿 From a Clogged Sink to an Award-Winning Innovation
It began with an everyday problem - food scraps entering the sink, blocking the pipes, creating unpleasant smells and eventually polluting the drainage system.
Instead of accepting this as something unavoidable, four young innovators from SM Konven St. Ursula Tawau asked a simple question:
“What if the sink could trap food waste and warn us before the water level becomes too high?”
That question inspired the Environmental Ranger team to create the Waste Trap, a smart device designed to keep sinks cleaner, safer and more environmentally friendly.
Installed beneath a sink, the Waste Trap uses a high - capacity filter to collect food scraps before they enter and clog the pipes. However, the innovation does more than simply catch waste. An ultrasonic sensor continuously monitors the water level inside the container.
When the water rises beyond the designated level, an Arduino-controlled system activates a buzzer and LED warning light. This immediately alerts the user that the trap needs attention - helping prevent overflowing water, blocked pipes and costly repairs.
The Waste Trap is easy to install, clean and maintain. By stopping food waste before it reaches the drainage system, it can also help reduce unpleasant odours and minimise the amount of organic waste entering our waterways. It is suitable for use in school and commercial sinks, demonstrating how a relatively simple idea can solve a common, real - world problem.
Behind this thoughtful innovation are Qisya Arissa binti Rudy, Siti Zulkhaidjah binti Jufri, Syarmila binti Sudirman and Qayra Arissa binti Mas Hendra. Together, they turned observation into action and combined environmental awareness with practical technology.
Their hard work earned the Environmental Ranger team the “Most Promising Solid Waste Innovation” award and a RM500 prize at the Borneo Solid Waste Management Innovation Challenge (BSWMIC) 2026 - Zone Lahad Datu.
The Waste Trap reminds us that innovation does not always need to begin with a complicated problem. Sometimes, it begins at the kitchen sink - with a small idea capable of making a big difference.

♻️ One Bottle. One Change. A Greener Future.
What if recycling at school could be simple, rewarding and powered by smart technology?
That idea inspired students from SMKA Tun Juhar to create REVIVE 2.0 - a smart reverse vending machine designed to encourage better recycling habits among students.
Using REVIVE 2.0 is easy. Students scan their personal QR code before inserting a plastic bottle or aluminium can into the machine. The system then records the recycling activity and awards points, which students can redeem for rewards or coupons. Through its IoT-powered monitoring system, the school can also collect useful recycling data and track student participation.
REVIVE 2.0 transforms recycling from a routine responsibility into an engaging and rewarding experience. By combining smart recycling, cashless rewards and environmental education, the innovation aims to reduce plastic waste, improve waste management and nurture a greener lifestyle within the school community.
The team’s creativity and commitment earned REVIVE 2.0 the “Most Promising Scheduled Waste Innovation” award, together with a RM500 prize, at the Borneo Solid Waste Management Innovation Challenge 2026.
This achievement shows that technology can do more than make life convenient - it can inspire positive habits and help build a more sustainable future.

🏆 From Discarded Materials to a Gold-Winning Innovation
What others might see as waste, a group of young innovators saw as an opportunity.
Their project, A-Starter (Pemula Api), began with a simple but meaningful idea: to transform discarded materials into a practical fire-starting product. By giving waste a useful second life, the team created an alternative fire starter that is compact, easy to carry and convenient to use.
Guided by the inspiring message “Kecil Menyala, Alam Terpelihara,” A-Starter demonstrates how a small flame can represent a much bigger purpose. The innovation helps reduce waste while encouraging people to think creatively about the materials they normally throw away.
Bringing the idea to life required more than imagination. The young innovators researched suitable materials, developed and refined their production process, tested the product’s performance, compared it with existing alternatives and confidently presented their findings to the judges.
Their creativity, determination and concern for the environment earned A-Starter two remarkable honours at the Borneo Solid Waste Management Innovation Challenge (BSWMIC) 2026 - Zone Lahad Datu on 11th July 2026:
