Veterinary Summer Scholars
Veterinary Summer Scholars
First- and second-year DVM students are invited to apply for the 2026 Veterinary Summer Scholars Program. Review the 'Projects' tab for project descriptions, 'Application Instructions' tab for more details on the process, and the 'Program Handbook' tab for guidance if you pursue an opportunity.
If you were unable to attend the info session on December 2, you can view the recording here.
Together with our funding partners, we have a shared goal to create veterinary research scientists skilled in hypothesis-driven research and translational medicine. This is a summer research program for veterinary students from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). Veterinary students from outside the University of Minnesota are also eligible and encouraged to apply.
Through this program, students will:
Gain firsthand experience in research, including techniques, hypothesis development, and data evaluation.
Develop your communication and critical thinking skills.
Develop your understanding of the scientific basis for modern medicine.
Explore career paths beyond veterinary practice.
Attend the CVM RIDE Summit.
Earn a $7,197 stipend while you learn.
Attend the Veterinary Scholars Symposium.
Get 2 credits for VSci/CMB 5594 in the fall.
Step 1: Review the application process and available projects.
Step 2: Contact the Principal Investigator(s) for projects that you're interested in.
Step 3: Complete the online application by January 12, 2026.
More than one student may apply to each project. Applications are accepted only for projects previously submitted by faculty and approved by the Veterinary Summer Scholars committee. Please only submit projects where you have previously discussed the project with the listed Principal Investigator (PI). Applications must be written by students.
If you are a DVM student at another institution, the application process is almost exactly the same. However, please note that as part of the application we require a letter from your institution confirming current enrollment in a DVM program and good academic standing.
● Statement of program interest ● Prior research experience (evaluated for certain funding sources) ● Funding availability
● Quality of project description ● Satisfactory academic standing
Student applications will be reviewed for clarity and quality of the project description, statement of interest for participating in the Summer Scholars program, academic standing, and degree of prior research experience. The project's ability to provide a scientific research experience for the scholar will also be considered. The review and final decisions will be made by the Summer Scholars Advisory Committee. All 1st- and 2nd-year CVM DVM students are eligible to apply. Applicants may inquire directly with project PIs regarding any course or grade prerequisites. Selections and offers of participation will be made no later than the first week of February.
