UMN Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club

Mission Statement

 
The Pre-Veterinary Club's purpose is to instill the utmost knowledge in future veterinarians through the use of speakers, tours, volunteer opportunities, and pet visits! Feel free to send us an email; we will meet over zoom and in-person!

The Pre-Veterinary Club brings in speakers from all different areas of veterinary medicine. We have speakers ranging from wildlife medicine to the humane society, rehabilitation, large animal, exotic animals, and so much more! During our meetings, we also share new opportunities for different internships and job opportunities in the metro area as well as in other states!

We host fun events and allow students opportunities to further their careers and help the community we live in and abroad.

What We Do

As a club, we meet once a month at a club meeting with a guest speaker. The guest speakers are all from veterinary medicine or the Animal Science field. While the speakers vary from meeting to meeting, they always provide great new knowledge, experiences, and opportunities. Apart from the guest speakers, we will also regularly offer relevant experiences and opportunities through club emails which are sent out about twice a month. The opportunities, connections, and support network gained from joining the Pre-Vet Club are sure to give you tools to succeed in the veterinary medicine or Animal Science fields. While this club is mostly focused on pre-vet opportunities, it can also be very relevant for people who are looking to pursue a career with animals in any other way. 

Opportunities and Events

• Walk with the Pre-Vet Club in the 2024 Homecoming Parade! We will be walking on University Avenue with our club members and their beloved pets on October 25 at 6:30 pm. 

• Volunteer at the Dog Rehab Center: Volunteer at the Dog Rehab Center at the VMC on campus to get hands-on experience with alternative medicine and dog handling. Email vmctlc@umn.edu for more information.

• Job Opening with Experimental Surgical Sciences: A large animal pre-clinical research lab making medical devices is looking for a student to work 15-20 hours a week.  Email Lisa for more info: dohm0004@umn.edu

• The Pre-Vet Club will be attending the 2025 APVMA Symposium hosted by LMU in Tennessee in March of 2025!

Meetings Dates and Times

• September 11 at 7pm in Ruttan Hall B25: First meeting! Get to know the PVC and meet representatives from our partner clubs- SIRVS and Vetouch!

• October 2 at 7pm in Ruttan Hall B25: Meeting with a representative from Ross University to discuss vet school, applications and other related topics

• November 6 at 6pm on Zoom: Meeting with University of Melbourne Vet School to discuss what vet school is like abroad

• December 4 at 6pm in Ruttan Hall B25: Meet with veterinarians and other staff  Canterbury Park and through the Minnesota Horse Racing Commission
