Awards based on three categories:
Public Health Equity Impact
This category rewarded projects that demonstrate a clear understanding of health disparities and proposed actionable solutions to address them. Judges looked for submissions that thoughtfully connect their data analysis to the improvement of health equity in Hennepin County, particularly projects that could influence public policy or have a tangible impact on the community.
What we looked for:
Clear articulation of how the project addresses specific health equity issues.
Potential for real-world application or policy influence.
Innovative approaches to reducing health inequities.
Exposing inequities that may not be currently known.
Data Storytelling
This category recognized projects that excel at communicating complex data in a way that is engaging, clear, and accessible to a broad audience. Whether through visuals, narratives, or other media, successful projects in this category demonstrated the power of data to tell a compelling story about health equity.
What we're looked for:
Effective use of visual or narrative elements to explain the analysis.
Clarity and creativity in communicating findings to a non-technical audience.
Use of data storytelling to inspire action or raise awareness of health equity issues.
Analytical Rigor
This category awarded projects that showcase strong technical analysis, sound methodology, and thorough attention to detail. Participants will be recognized for their ability to conduct a robust analysis, and clearly explain their process.
What we're looked for:
Use of appropriate data analytical techniques.
Well-documented and reproducible code.
Thoughtful consideration of the limitations and challenges of the analysis.
Prizes awarded for each category at three different participant levels:
Undergraduate: For undergraduate students across any discipline.
MPH Students: For Master of Public Health (MPH) candidates.
Graduate: For graduate students, PhD candidates, and any other participants not falling into the above categories.
