Med Derm Residency

Mission Statement

Our mission for the University of Minnesota’s Combined Medicine-Dermatology residency program is to train leaders in the field of medical dermatology.  Residents are trained to practice both high-quality internal medicine and dermatology and encouraged to focus on an area of interest that bridges these two disciplines. Throughout training, our residents are expected to act as liaisons for and provide interdisciplinary education to their colleagues in both specialties, as well as engage in scholarly activities that will prepare them to become leaders in their area of interest.

Program Structure

The Combined Internal Medicine and Dermatology residency is a 5 year program. Med Derm residents spend their first year completing their intern year in Internal Medicine, their second year in Dermatology, and their PGY 3-5 years rotating between specialties every 3-6 months. Residents function as IM and Derm residents while rotating in each department and are board eligible in both specialties upon graduation.

Med Derm residents have the opportunity to participate in the Global Health Pathway, ideal for those interested in treating a global mobile population, such as immigrants, refugees or international travelers. One of only 17 courses offered worldwide, ours is the only program of its kind offered in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For more information about the Medicine side of the program, please review the Internal Medicine Residency website, and for more information about the dermatology side, please see the Dermatology Residency page of this site.

How to Apply

All residency positions are offered through the National Residency Matching Program. Invitations to interview and appointments to the program are made by the Residency Selection Committee. American Medical Graduates should contact their Dean’s Office for information. International Medical Graduates should contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). No paper applications will be accepted. The application deadline for the 2024 Match has passed. We are no longer accepting applications at this time.
