Non-ACGME-accredited, 1 year advanced fellowship
The University of Minnesota's Department of Cardiovascular Medicine is establishing a new, one-year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship program in Pulmonary Hypertension, with the first fellow anticipated to start as soon as July 1, 2026. This program is designed to provide super-specialty training for cardiologists and pulmonologists, addressing an urgent need for physicians skilled in managing this complex condition. The university is uniquely positioned to offer this advanced training as a Pulmonary Hypertension Association-accredited Comprehensive PH Care Center, which serves a robust base of approximately 1,200 active patients and is one of only around ten such institutional training programs nationwide.
The fellowship's curriculum is structured as a 12-month rotation block, with all training based at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center. A fellow's time is divided among several key areas: 35% is dedicated to inpatient care and 35% is allotted to outpatient clinics, which may take place at UMN, Southdale, or Woodwinds. The remaining time is allocated to procedural training in the UMMC Cath Lab (10%) and dedicated scholarly activity (20%), which includes clinical translational research, literature reviews, and case preparations.
The primary focus of the fellowship is to train physicians in the advanced diagnosis and management of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right heart failure. The program's rationale stems from the evolving landscape of PH treatment, which now ranges from oral medications to percutaneous procedures, complex cardiac surgeries, and lung transplants—areas where current fellowship training is often insufficient. Fellows will gain cutting-edge knowledge under experienced faculty, with the goal of training specialists who can improve healthcare quality and transform outcomes for this growing and undertreated patient population.
To be eligible, applicants must have successfully completed a 3-year ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease fellowship or a 3-year ACGME-accredited Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship.
