The Chrysalis (La Crisálida) by Miguel Fiol
Directed by Joe Moses
Miguel Fiol's drama puts family love, silence, and survival center stage when a son sets surprising events in motion on his 21st birthday.
The setting is 1990s Ponce, Puerto Rico, where a father, Eduardo, works as an accountant for an American pharmaceutical company that makes life-saving AIDS medications. Frightened of coming out to his parents because of their oft-repeated condemnations of anyone who is...like that, Raul hopes instead to enlist some support for his lifelong friend Jose, whose parents are sending him away for conversion therapy.
Raul calls on the spirits of his late grandparents, hoping that reminding Eduardo of his parents' fight against injustice during the ‘30s and ‘40s will inspire Eduardo to act on Jose's behalf. Raul’s grandfather appears, but he reveals family secrets that inspire fear instead of hope.
Raul’s mother, Eva, learns that serving God, family, and herself has to be more than obeying other people's wishes if she is to follow her own heart. Raul’s older brother, Francisco, must choose between loyalty to his father or to his brother when misinformation drives Francisco's menacing baseball teammate to threaten the lives of the entire family.
