Stochastic Hypersonics Research Group
Welcome!
We are a research group in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota. Our research advances the understanding of hypersonic flows by developing ways to represent, quantify, manipulate, and predict uncertainty, ultimately enabling more trustworthy modeling, simulation, and experimental decision-making. We investigate how imperfect knowledge of complex, multi-physics phenomena influences every stage of the research process, from experimental data collection and interpretation to model development, synthesis, and validation. At the heart of our work is the development and application of stochastic methods spanning sensitivity analysis, surrogate modeling, forward uncertainty propagation, Bayesian inverse problems, optimization under uncertainty, and data-driven modeling. We apply these tools across a broad range of challenging problems in hypersonics.
The Stochastic Hypersonics Research Group operates at the intersection of applied mathematics and aerospace engineering, bringing together ideas from both disciplines to tackle fundamental and practical challenges in hypersonic science and technology. By rigorously accounting for uncertainty, our research seeks to improve the predictive accuracy, robustness, and reliability of state-of-the-art hypersonic simulations, helping pave the way toward the design and development of the next generation of hypersonic systems.
